Get a profound understanding for what is called “Registers”
“Which register am I in right now?”
“Is this chest voice, head voice… or something else?”
Questions like these arise often in voice lessons — and the answers aren’t always clear.
Vocal registers are among the most debated topics in voice pedagogy. Different schools, traditions, and teachers define and explain them in very different ways. Even voice science has not reached a full consensus.
In this workshop, we’ll explore current scientific perspectives on vocal registers, drawing on both physiology and acoustics. We’ll clarify the concepts of laryngeal mechanisms and phonation types, and explain how vocal fold mass and adduction interact in register shifts. You’ll learn how to recognize different vibratory patterns and what they mean for sound, effort, efficiency, and style.
With a multi-parametric approach and lots of practical examples, we’ll connect theory to real-life singing and speaking — with a focus on vocal health, function, and artistic expression.
Clear. Practical. Evidence-based.
You’ll learn:
✔ What vocal registers are: an overview of historical, pedagogical, and scientific views
✔ Laryngeal physiology: vocal fold vibration, adduction types, and muscle coordination
✔ Acoustic perspectives: how resonance and perception influence register categorization
✔ A multi-parametric approach: understanding the interplay between laryngeal mechanisms and phonation types
✔ Practical application: how to guide singers safely and effectively through register transitions
✔ Tools & exercises: perceptual and visual strategies to explore vocal possibilities
Materials:
No special materials required. Optional: mirror, straw or LAX VOX® tube, recording device.
Who is it for?
Voice teachers, singing professionals, speech therapists, and curious vocalists of all styles who want to better understand how the voice works — and how to work with it.
